Chapter 15 ¹ After𐤀𐤇𐤓 these things𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 the word𐤃𐤁𐤓 of the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 came𐤄𐤉𐤄 unto Abram𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 in a vision,𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤆𐤄 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Fear𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 not, Abram:𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 I am thy shield,𐤌𐤂𐤍 and thy exceeding𐤌𐤀𐤃 great𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 reward.𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤊 Μετὰ δὲ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐγενήθη ῥῆμα ὁράματι λέγων Μὴ φοβοῦ, Ἀβράμ· ἐγὼ ὑπερασπίζω σου· ὁ μισθός σου πολὺς ἱστᾶι σφόδρα. ² And Abram𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Lord𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 God,𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 what wilt thou give𐤕𐤕𐤍 me, seeing I go𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤊 childless,𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤓𐤉 and the steward𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤒 of my house𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 is this𐤄𐤅𐤀 Eliezer𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤓 of Damascus?𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒 λέγει δὲ Ἀβράμ Δέσποτα κύριε, τί μοι δώσεις; ἐγὼ δὲ ἀπολύομαι ἄτεκνος· ὁ δὲ υἱὸς Μάσεκ τῆς οἰκογενοῦς μου, οὗτος Δαμασκὸς Ἐλιέζερ. ³ And Abram𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Behold, to me thou hast given𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤄 no𐤋𐤀 seed:𐤆𐤓𐤏 and, lo, one born𐤁𐤍 in my house𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 is mine heir.𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤔 καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβρόμ Ἐπειδὴ ἐμοὶ οὐκ σπέρμα, σπέρμα, ὁ δὲ οἰκογενής μου κληρονομήσει με. ⁴ And, behold, the word𐤃𐤁𐤓 of the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 came unto him, saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 This shall not be thine heir;𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤊 but he that shall come forth𐤉𐤑𐤀 out of thine own bowels𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤊 shall be thine heir.𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤊 καὶ εὐθὺς φωνὴ κυρίου ἐγένετο πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐ κληρονομήσει σε οὗτος· ἀλλ’ ὄς ἐξελεύσεται ἐκ σοῦ, οὗτος κληρονομήσει σε. ⁵ And he brought him forth𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 abroad,𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 and said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Look𐤄𐤁𐤈 now toward heaven,𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄 and tell𐤅𐤎𐤐𐤓 the stars,𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 if thou be able𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤋 to number𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤓 them: and he said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, So𐤊𐤄 shall thy seed𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 be. ἐξήγαγεν δὲ αὐτὸν ἵξω καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἀν’άβλεψον δὴ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἀρίθμησον τοὺς ἀστέρας, εἰ δύνῃ ἐξαριθμῆσαι αὐτούς. καὶ οὕτως ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα σου. ⁶ And he believed𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤍 in the Lord;𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 and he counted𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤄 it to him for righteousness.𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 καὶ ἐπίστευσεν Ἀβρὰμ τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην. ⁷ And he said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, I am the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 that brought thee out𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤊 of Ur𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤓 of the Chaldees,𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 to give𐤋𐤕𐤕 thee this land𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 to inherit𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤄 it. εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἐγὼ ὁ ὁ ἐξαγαγών σε ἐκ χώρας Χαλδαίαν, ὥστε δοῦναί σοι τὴν γῆν ταύτην κληρονομῆσαι. ⁸ And he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Lord𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 God,𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 whereby𐤁𐤌𐤄 shall I know𐤀𐤃𐤏 that I shall inherit it?𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤍𐤄 εἶπεν δέ Δέσποτα Κύριε, κατὰ τί γνώσομαι ὅτι κληρονομήσω αὐτήν; ⁹ And he said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, Take𐤒𐤇𐤄 me an heifer𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤄 of three years old,𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 and a she goat𐤅𐤏𐤆 of three years old,𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 and a ram𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤋 of three years old,𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤔 and a turtledove,𐤅𐤕𐤓 and a young pigeon.𐤅𐤂𐤅𐤆𐤋 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ λάβε μοι δάμαλιν τριετίζουσαν καὶ αἶγα τριετίζουσαν καὶ κριὸν τριετίζοντα καὶ τρυγόνα καὶ περιστεράν. ¹⁰ And he took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 unto him all these, and divided𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤕𐤓 them in the midst,𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 and laid𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 each𐤀𐤉𐤔 piece𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤅 one against another:𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 but the birds𐤄𐤑𐤐𐤓 divided𐤁𐤕𐤓 he not. ἔλαβεν δὲ αὐτῶ πάντα ταῦτα, καὶ διἑλͅεν αὐτὰ μέσα, καὶ αὐτὰ ἀντιπρόσωπα ἀλλήλοις· τὰ δὲ ὄρνεα οὐ διἑλͅεν. ¹¹ And when the fowls𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤈 came down𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 upon the carcases,𐤄𐤐𐤂𐤓𐤉𐤌 Abram𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 drove them away.𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 κατέβη δὲ ὄρνεα ἐπὶ τὰ σώματα, τὰ διχοτομήματα αὐτῶν· καὶ συνεκάθισεν αὐτοῖς Ἀβράμ. ¹² And when the sun𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 was going down,𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 a deep sleep𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤃𐤌𐤄 fell𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤄 upon Abram;𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 and, lo, an horror𐤀𐤉𐤌𐤄 of great𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 darkness𐤇𐤔𐤊𐤄 fell𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤕 upon him. περὶ δὲ ἡλίου δυσμὰς ἔκστασις ἐπέπεσεν τῷ Ἀβράμ, ἰδοὺ φόβος σκοτινὸς μέγας ἐπιπίτει αὐτῷ· ¹³ And he said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto Abram,𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 Know𐤉𐤃𐤏 of a surety𐤕𐤃𐤏 that thy seed𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 shall be a stranger𐤂𐤓 in a land𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 that is not theirs, and shall serve𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅𐤌 them; and they shall afflict𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤅 them four𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 hundred𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 years;𐤔𐤍𐤄 καὶ ἐρρέθη πρὸς Ἀβράρ Γινώσκων γνώσῃ ὅτι πάροικον ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα σου ἐν γῇ οὐκ ἰδία, καὶ κακώσουσιν αὐτὸ καὶ δουλώσουσιν αὐτοὺς καὶ ταπεινώσουσιν αὐτοὺς τετρακόσια ἤ. ¹⁴ And also that nation,𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 whom they shall serve,𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 will I judge:𐤃𐤍 and afterward𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤍 shall they come out𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 with great𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 substance.𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤔 τὸ δὲ ἔθνος ᾧ ἐὰν δουλεύσωσιν κρινῶ μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἐξελεύσονται ὧδε μετὰ ἀποσκευῆς πολλῆς. ¹⁵ And thou shalt go𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 to thy fathers𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊 in peace;𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 thou shalt be buried𐤕𐤒𐤁𐤓 in a good𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄 old age.𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤄 σὺ δὲ ἀπελεύσῃ πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας σου μετ’ εἰρήνης, τραφεὶς ἐν γήρει καλῷ. ¹⁶ But in the fourth𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 generation𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤓 they shall come hither𐤄𐤍𐤄 again:𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 for the iniquity𐤏𐤅𐤍 of the Amorites𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 is not yet𐤄𐤍𐤄 full.𐤔𐤋𐤌 τετάρτῃ δὲ γενεᾷ ἀποστραφήσονται ὧδε· οὔπω γὰρ ἀναπεπλήρωνται αἱ ἁμαρτίαι τῶν Ἀμορραίων ἕως τοῦ νῦν. ¹⁷ And it came to pass, that, when the sun𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 went down,𐤁𐤀𐤄 and it was dark,𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤈𐤄 behold a smoking𐤏𐤔𐤍 furnace,𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤓 and a burning𐤀𐤔 lamp𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤃 that passed𐤏𐤁𐤓 between𐤁𐤉𐤍 those pieces.𐤄𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤌 ἐπεὶ δὲ ἐγίνετο ὁ ἥλιος πρὸς δυσμαῖς, φλὸξ ἐγένετο· καὶ ἰδού κλίβανος καπνιζόμενος καὶ λαμπάδες πυρός, αἳ διῆλθον ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν διχοτομημάτων τούτῶν. ¹⁸ In the same𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 day𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 made𐤊𐤓𐤕 a covenant𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 with Abram,𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Unto thy seed𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 have I given𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 this land,𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 from the river𐤌𐤍𐤄𐤓 of Egypt𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 unto the great𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋 river,𐤄𐤍𐤄𐤓 the river𐤍𐤄𐤓 Euphrates:𐤐𐤓𐤕 ἐκεῖ διέθετο ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ἀβρὰμ διαθήκην λέγων τῷ σπέρματί σου δώσω τὴν γῆν ταύτην, ἀπὸ τοῦ ποταμοῦ Αἰγύπτου ἕως τοῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ μεγάλου Εὐφμάτου· τούς Κεναίους καὶ τοὺς ενεζαίους καὶ τοὺς Κελμωναίους 20 καὶ τοὺς Χετταίους καὶ τοὺς Φερεζαίους καὶ τοὺς Ῥαφαεὶν τοὺς Ἀμορραίους καὶ τοὺς Χαναναίους καὶ Εὑοίους καὶ τοὺς Γεργεσαίους καὶ τοὺς Ἰεβουσαίους. ¹⁹ The Kenites,𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤉 and the Kenizzites,𐤄𐤒𐤍𐤆𐤉 and the Kadmonites,𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤍𐤉 ²⁰ And the Hittites,𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤉 and the Perizzites,𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤉 and the Rephaims,𐤄𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌 ²¹ And the Amorites,𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 and the Canaanites,𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 and the Girgashites,𐤄𐤂𐤓𐤂𐤔𐤉 and the Jebusites.𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤎𐤉 𐤎
