Chapter 3 ¹ Now the serpent𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 was𐤄𐤉𐤄 more subtil𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 than any beast𐤇𐤉𐤕 of the field𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 which the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 had made.𐤏𐤔𐤄 And he said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the woman,𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 Yea,𐤀𐤐 hath God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 said,𐤀𐤌𐤓 Ye shall not eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 of every tree𐤏𐤑 of the garden?𐤄𐤂𐤍 καὶ ἦσαν οἱ δύο γυμνοί, ὅ τε Ἀδὰμ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ᾐσχύνοντο. Ὁ δὲ ὄφις ἦν φρονιμώτατος πάντων τῶν θηρίων τῶν θηρίων τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὧν ἐποίησεν Κύριος ὁ θεός. καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ὄφις τῇ γυναικί Τί ὅτι εἶπεν ὁ θεός Οὐ μὴ φάγητε ἀπὸ παντὸς ξύλου τοῦ παραδείσου; ² And the woman𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 said𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the serpent,𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 We may eat𐤍𐤀𐤊𐤋 of the fruit𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 of the trees𐤏𐤑 of the garden:𐤄𐤂𐤍 καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ τῷ ὄφει Ἀπὸ παντὸς ξύλου τοῦ παραδείσου φαγόμεθα· ³ But of the fruit𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 of the tree𐤄𐤏𐤑 which is in the midst𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 of the garden,𐤄𐤂𐤍 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 hath said,𐤀𐤌𐤓 Ye shall not eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 of it, neither shall ye touch𐤕𐤂𐤏𐤅 it, lest𐤐𐤍 ye die.𐤕𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤍 ἀπὸ δὲ καρποῦ τοῦ ξύλου ὅ ἐστιν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ παραδείσου, εἶπεν ὁ θεός Οὐ φάγεσθε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ μὴ ἅψησθε αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνητε. ⁴ And the serpent𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the woman,𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 Ye shall not surely𐤌𐤅𐤕 die:𐤕𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤍 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ὄφις τῇ γυναικί Οὐ θανάτῳ ἀποθανεῖσθε· ⁵ For God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 doth know𐤉𐤃𐤏 that in the day𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 ye eat𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌 thereof, then your eyes𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 shall be opened,𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤒𐤇𐤅 and ye shall be as gods,𐤊𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 knowing𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤉 good𐤈𐤅𐤁 and evil.𐤅𐤓𐤏 ᾔδει γὰρ ὁ θεὸς ὅτι ἐν ἧ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ φάγησθε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ, διανοιχθήσονται ὑμῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί, καὶ ἔσεσθε ὡς θεοί, γινώσκοντες καλὸν καὶ πονηρόν. ⁶ And when the woman𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 saw𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤀 that the tree𐤄𐤏𐤑 was good𐤈𐤅𐤁 for food,𐤋𐤌𐤀𐤊𐤋 and that it𐤄𐤅𐤀 was pleasant𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 to the eyes,𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 and a tree𐤄𐤏𐤑 to be desired𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤃 to make one wise,𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋 she took𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇 of the fruit thereof,𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤅 and did eat,𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 and gave𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤍 also𐤂𐤌 unto her husband𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 with her; and he did eat.𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 καὶ ἴδεν ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι καλὸν τὸ ξύλον εἰς βρῶσιν, καὶ ὅτι ἀρεστὸν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ἰδεῖν καὶ ὡραῖόν ἐστιν τοῦ κατανοῆσαι, καὶ λαβοῦσα τοῦ καρποῦ αὐτοῦ ἔφαγεν· καὶ ἔδωκεν καὶ τῶ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς μετ’ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἔφαγον. ⁷ And the eyes𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 of them both𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 were opened,𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤒𐤇𐤍𐤄 and they𐤄𐤌 knew𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 that they were naked;𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤌 and they sewed𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤓𐤅 fig𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤄 leaves𐤏𐤋𐤄 together, and made themselves𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 aprons.𐤇𐤂𐤓𐤕 καὶ διηνοίχθησαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τῶν δύο, καὶ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι γυμνοὶ ήσαν· καὶ ἔρραψαν φύλλα συκῆς καὶ ἐποίησαν ἑαυτοῖς περιζώματα. ⁸ And they heard𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 the voice𐤒𐤅𐤋 of the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 walking𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 in the garden𐤁𐤂𐤍 in the cool𐤋𐤓𐤅𐤇 of the day:𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 and Adam𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 and his wife𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 hid themselves𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤀 from the presence𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 of the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 amongst𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 the trees𐤏𐤑 of the garden.𐤄𐤂𐤍 Καὶ ἤκουσαν τὴν φωνὴν Κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ περιπατοῦντος ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τὸ δειλινόν· καὶ ἐκρύβησαν ὅ τε Ἀδὰμ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ ξύλου τοῦ παραδείσου. ⁹ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 unto Adam,𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 and said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, Where art thou?𐤀𐤉𐤊𐤄 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τὸν Ἀδὰμ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀδάμ, ποῦ εἶ; ¹⁰ And he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 I heard𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉 thy voice𐤒𐤋𐤊 in the garden,𐤁𐤂𐤍 and I was afraid,𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤀 because I𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 was naked;𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 and I hid myself.𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤁𐤀 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τὴν φωνήν σου ἤκουσα περιπατοῦντος ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ, καὶ ἐφοβήθην, ὅτι γυμνός εἰμι, καὶ ἐκρύβην. ¹¹ And he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Who𐤌𐤉 told𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃 thee that thou wast naked?𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 Hast thou eaten𐤀𐤊𐤋 of the tree,𐤄𐤏𐤑 whereof I commanded thee𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤊 that thou shouldest not𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 eat?𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τίς ἀνήγγειλέν σοι ὅτι γυμνὸς εἶ, εἰ μὴ ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου οὗ ἐνετειλάμην σοι τούτου μόνου μὴ φαγεῖν, ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἔφαγες; ¹² And the man𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 The woman𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 whom thou gavest𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤄 to be with me,𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉 she𐤄𐤅𐤀 gave𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 me of the tree,𐤄𐤏𐤑 and I did eat.𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἀδάμ Ἡ γυνή, ἣν ἔδωκας μετ’ ἐμοῦ, αὕτη μοι ἔδωκεν ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου, καὶ ἔφαγον. ¹³ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the woman,𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄 What is this that thou hast done?𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 And the woman𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 said,𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 The serpent𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 beguiled me,𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤀𐤍𐤉 and I did eat.𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋 καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῇ γυναικί Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας; καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Ὁ ὄφις ἠπάτησέν με, καὶ ἔφαγον. ¹⁴ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the serpent,𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 Because thou𐤀𐤕𐤄 hast done𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 this, thou art cursed𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 above all cattle,𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 and above every beast𐤇𐤉𐤕 of the field;𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 upon thy belly𐤂𐤇𐤍𐤊 shalt thou go, and dust𐤅𐤏𐤐𐤓 shalt thou eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 all the days𐤉𐤌𐤉 of thy life:𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤊 καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῷ ὄφει Ὅτι ἐποίησας τοῦτο, ἐπικατάρατος σὺ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν θηρίων τῆς γῆς· ἐπὶ τῷ στήθει σου καὶ τῇ κοιλίᾳ πορεύση, καὶ γῆν φάγῃ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου. ¹⁵ And I will put𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 enmity𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤄 between thee and the woman,𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 and between thy seed𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 and her seed;𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤄 it shall bruise𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤊 thy head,𐤓𐤀𐤔 and thou shalt bruise𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤅 his heel.𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤎 καὶ ἔχθραν θήσω ἀνὰ μέσον σου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς γυναικός, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτῆς. αὐτός σου τηρήσει κεφαλήν, καὶ σὺ τηρήσεις αὐτοῦ πτέρναν. ¹⁶ Unto the woman𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 he said,𐤀𐤌𐤓 I will greatly𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 multiply𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄 thy sorrow𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤊 and thy conception;𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤍𐤊 in sorrow𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤁 thou shalt bring forth𐤕𐤋𐤃𐤉 children;𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 and thy desire𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤕𐤊 shall be to thy husband,𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤊 and he shall rule𐤉𐤌𐤔𐤋 over thee. καὶ τῇ γυναικὶ εἶπεν Πληθύνων πληθυνῶ τὰς λύπας σου καὶ τὸν στεναγμόν σου· ἐν λύπαις τέξῃ τέκνα, καὶ πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα σου ἡ ἀποστροφή σου, καὶ αὐτός σου κυριεύσει. ¹⁷ And unto Adam𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 he said,𐤀𐤌𐤓 Because thou hast hearkened𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 unto the voice𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 of thy wife,𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 and hast eaten𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 of the tree,𐤄𐤏𐤑 of which𐤀𐤔𐤓 I commanded thee,𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤊 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Thou shalt not eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 of it: cursed𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓𐤄 is the ground𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 for thy sake; in sorrow𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤍 shalt thou eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤄 of it all𐤊𐤋 the days𐤉𐤌𐤉 of thy life;𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤊 τῷ δὲ Ἀδὰμ εἶπεν Ὅτι ἤκουσας τῆς φωνῆς τῆς γυναικός σου καὶ ἔφαγες ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου οὗ ἐνετειλάμην σοι τούτου μόνου μὴ φαγεῖν, ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἔφαγες, ἐπικατάρατος ἡ γῆ ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις σου· ἐν λύπαις φάγῃ αὐτὴν πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου· ¹⁸ Thorns also𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤑 and thistles𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤃𐤓 shall it bring forth𐤕𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤇 to thee; and thou shalt eat𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕 the herb𐤏𐤔𐤁 of the field;𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 ἀκάνθας καὶ τριβόλους ἀνατελεῖ σοι, καὶ φάγῃ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀργοῦ. ¹⁹ In the sweat𐤁𐤆𐤏𐤕 of thy face𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤊 shalt thou eat𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 bread,𐤋𐤇𐤌 till𐤏𐤃 thou return𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤊 unto the ground;𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 for out of it wast thou taken:𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 for dust𐤏𐤐𐤓 thou𐤀𐤕𐤄 art, and unto dust𐤏𐤐𐤓 shalt thou return.𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 ἐν ἱδρῶτι τοῦ προσώπου σου φάγῃ τὸν ἄρτον σου ἕως τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι σε εἰς τὴν γῆν ἐξ ἧς ἐλήμφθης· ὅτι γῆ εἶ καὶ εἰς γῆν ἀπελεύσῃ. ²⁰ And Adam𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 his wife's𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 name𐤔𐤌 Eve;𐤇𐤅𐤄 because she was the mother𐤀𐤌 of all living.𐤇𐤉 Καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἀδὰμ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς γυναικὸς Ζωή, ὅτι αῦτη μήτηρ πάντων τῶν ζώντων. ²¹ Unto Adam also and to his wife𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 did the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 make𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 coats𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤕 of skins,𐤏𐤅𐤓 and clothed them.𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤌 𐤐 καὶ ἐποίησεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ἀδὰμ καὶ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ χιτῶνας δερματίνους, καὶ ἐνέδυσεν αὐτούς. ²² And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Behold,𐤄𐤍 the man𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 is become as one𐤊𐤀𐤇𐤃 of us, to know𐤋𐤃𐤏𐤕 good𐤈𐤅𐤁 and evil:𐤅𐤓𐤏 and now, lest he put forth𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 his hand,𐤉𐤃𐤅 and take𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇 also of the tree𐤌𐤏𐤑 of life,𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 and eat,𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋 and live for ever:𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤌 Καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεός Ἰδοὺ Ἀδάμ γέγονεν ὡς εἷς ἐξ ἡμῶν, τοῦ γινώσκειν καλὸν καὶ πονηρόν· καὶ νῦν μή ποτε ἐκτείνῃ τὴν χεῖρα καὶ λάβῃ τοῦ ξύλου τῆς ζωῆς καὶ φάγῃ, καὶ ζήσεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. ²³ Therefore the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 sent him forth𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄𐤅 from the garden𐤌𐤂𐤍 of Eden,𐤏𐤃𐤍 to till𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 the ground𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 from whence he was taken.𐤋𐤒𐤇 καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτὸν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς, ἐργάζεσθαι τὴν γῆν ἐξ ἧς ἐλήμφθη. ²⁴ So he drove out𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤓𐤔 the man;𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 and he placed𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 at the east𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 of the garden𐤋𐤂𐤍 of Eden𐤏𐤃𐤍 Cherubims,𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 and a flaming𐤋𐤄𐤈 sword𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 which turned every way,𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤕 to keep𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓 the way𐤃𐤓𐤊 of the tree𐤏𐤑 of life.𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤎 καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τὸν Ἀδὰμ καὶ κατῴκισεν αὐτὸν ἀπέναντι τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς, καὶ ἔταξεν τὰ χερουβὶν καὶ τὴν φλογίνην ῥομφαίαν τὴν στρεφομένην φυλάσσειν τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ ξύλου τῆς ζωῆς.
