Chapter 28 ¹ And Isaac𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 Jacob,𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 and blessed𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊 him, and charged𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅𐤄𐤅 him, and said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, Thou shalt not take𐤕𐤒𐤇 a wife𐤀𐤔𐤄 of the daughters𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 of Canaan.𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 XXVIIIτὸν Ἰακὼβ εὐλόγησεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ λέγων Οὐ λήμψῃ γυναῖκα ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Χανάαν· ² Arise,𐤒𐤅𐤌 go to Padan–aram,𐤐𐤃𐤍𐤄 to the house𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 of Bethuel𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤀𐤋 thy mother's𐤀𐤌𐤊 father;𐤀𐤁𐤉 and take𐤅𐤒𐤇 thee a wife𐤀𐤔𐤄 from thence of the daughters𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 of Laban𐤋𐤁𐤍 thy mother's𐤀𐤌𐤊 brother.𐤀𐤇𐤉 ἀναστὰς ἀπόδραθι εἰς τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν Συρίας εἰς τὸν οἶκον Βαθουὴλ τοῦ πατρὸς μητρός σου, καὶ λάβε σεαυτῷ ἐκεῖθεν γυναῖκα ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Λαβὰν λαβὰν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τῆς μητρός σου. ³ And God𐤅𐤀𐤋 Almighty𐤔𐤃𐤉 bless𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊 thee, and make thee fruitful,𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤓𐤊 and multiply𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤊 thee, that thou mayest be a multitude𐤋𐤒𐤄𐤋 of people;𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 ὁ δὲ θεός μου εὐλογήσαι σε καὶ αὐξήσαι σε καὶ πληθύναι σε, καὶ ἔσῃ εἰς συναγωγὰς ἐθνῶν· ⁴ And give𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 thee the blessing𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤕 of Abraham,𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 to thee, and to thy seed𐤅𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 with thee; that thou mayest inherit𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤊 the land𐤀𐤓𐤑 wherein thou art a stranger,𐤌𐤂𐤓𐤉𐤊 which God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 gave𐤍𐤕𐤍 unto Abraham.𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 καὶ δῴτ σοι τὴν εὐλογίαν Ἀβραὰμ τοῦ πατρός σου, σοὶ καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου μετὰ σέ, κληρονομῆσαι τὴν γῆν τῆς παροικήσεως σου, ἣν δέδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ἀβραάμ. ⁵ And Isaac𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 sent away𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 Jacob:𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 and he went to Padan–aram𐤐𐤃𐤍𐤄 unto Laban,𐤋𐤁𐤍 son𐤁𐤍 of Bethuel𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤀𐤋 the Syrian,𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤌𐤉 the brother𐤀𐤇𐤉 of Rebekah,𐤓𐤁𐤒𐤄 Jacob's𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 and Esau's𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤅 mother.𐤀𐤌 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἰακώβ· καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν πρὸς Λαβὰν τὸν υἱὸν Βαθουὴλ τοῦ Σύρου, ἀδελφὸν δὲ Ῥεβέκκας τῆς μητρὸς μητρὸς καὶ Ἠσαύ. ⁶ When Esau𐤏𐤔𐤅 saw𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 that Isaac𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 had blessed𐤁𐤓𐤊 Jacob,𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 and sent him away𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤇 to Padan–aram,𐤐𐤃𐤍𐤄 to take𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 him a wife𐤀𐤔𐤄 from thence; and that as he blessed𐤁𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅 him he gave him a charge,𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Thou shalt not take𐤕𐤒𐤇 a wife𐤀𐤔𐤄 of the daughters𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 of Canaan;𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 ἴδεν δὲ Ἠσαὺ ὅτι εὐλόγησεν Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἰακὼβ καὶ ἀπῴχετο εἰς τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν Συρίας λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ γυναῖκα, ἐν τῶ αὐτόν, καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ λέγων Οὐ λήμψῃ γυναῖκα ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων Χανάαν· ⁷ And that Jacob𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 obeyed𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 his father𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 and his mother,𐤀𐤌𐤅 and was gone to Padan–aram;𐤐𐤃𐤍𐤄 καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἰακὼβ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τῆς μητρὸς ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν. ⁸ And Esau𐤏𐤔𐤅 seeing𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 that the daughters𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 of Canaan𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 pleased𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 not𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 Isaac𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 his father;𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 καὶ ἴδεν Ἠσαὺ ὅτι πονηραί εἰσιν αἱ θυγατέρες Χανάαν ἐναντίον Ἰσαὰκ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, ⁹ Then went Esau𐤏𐤔𐤅 unto Ishmael,𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 and took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 unto the wives𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤅 which he had Mahalath𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤕 the daughter𐤁𐤕 of Ishmael𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 Abraham's𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 son,𐤁𐤍 the sister𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤕 of Nebajoth,𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤕 to be his wife.𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤎 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἠσαὺ πρὸς Ἰσμαήλ, καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν Μαελὲθ θυγατέρα Ἰσμαὴλ τοῦ υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ, ἀδελφὴν Ναβαιώθ, πρὸς ταῖς γυναιξὶν αὐτοῦ γυναῖκα. ¹⁰ And Jacob𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 went out𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 from Beer–sheba,𐤌𐤁𐤀𐤓 and went toward Haran.𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤄 Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰακὼβ ἀπὸ τοῦ φρέατος τοῦ ὅρκου, καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς ¹¹ And he lighted𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤂𐤏 upon a certain place,𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 and tarried there all night,𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤍 because the sun𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 was set;𐤁𐤀 and he took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 of the stones𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 of that place,𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 and put𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 them for his pillows,𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤅 and lay down𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤁 in that place𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 to sleep. καὶ ἀπήντησεν τόπῳ καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐκεῖ· ἔδυ γὰρ ὁ ἥλιος· καὶ ἔλαβεν ἀπὸ τῶν λίθων τοῦ τόπου καὶ ἐπέθηκεν πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ἐκείνῳ. ¹² And he dreamed,𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤌 and behold a ladder𐤎𐤋𐤌 set up𐤌𐤑𐤁 on the earth,𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 and the top of it𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅 reached𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤏 to heaven:𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄 and behold the angels𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉 of God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 ascending𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌 and descending𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 on it. καὶ ἐνυπνιάσθη· καὶ ἰδοὺ κλῖμαξ ἐστηριγμένη ἐν τῇ γῇ, ἧς ἡ κεφαλὴ ἀφικνεῖτο εἰς οὐρανόν, καὶ οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνέβαινον καὶ κατέβαινον ἐπ’ αὐτῆς. ¹³ And, behold, the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 stood𐤍𐤑𐤁 above it, and said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 I am the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 of Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 thy father,𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 and the God𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 of Isaac:𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 the land𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 whereon thou liest,𐤔𐤊𐤁 to thee will I give it,𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤄 and to thy seed;𐤅𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 ὁ δὲ κύριος ἐπεστήρικτο ἐπ’ αὐτῆς καὶ εἶπεν Ἐγὼ ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ τοῦ πατρός σου καὶ ὁ θεὸς Ἰσαάκ· μὴ φοβοῦ· ἡ γῆ ἐφ’ ἧς σὺ καθεύδεις ἐπ’ αὐτῆς, σοὶ δώσω αὐτὴν καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου. ¹⁴ And thy seed𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 shall be as the dust𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 of the earth,𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 and thou shalt spread abroad𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤑𐤕 to the west,𐤉𐤌𐤄 and to the east,𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤄 and to the north,𐤅𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤄 and to the south:𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤁𐤄 and in thee and in thy seed𐤅𐤁𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 shall all the families𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕 of the earth𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 be blessed.𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅 καὶ ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, καὶ πλατυνθήσεται ἐπὶ θάλασσαν καὶ ἐπὶ λίβα καὶ ἐπὶ βορρᾶν καὶ ἐπ’ ἀνατολάς·’ καὶ ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν σοὶ πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς ἰῆς καὶ ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου. ¹⁵ And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤊 thee in all places whither𐤀𐤔𐤓 thou goest, and will bring thee again𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊 into this land;𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 for I will not leave𐤀𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤊 thee, until𐤀𐤔𐤓 I have done𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 that which I have spoken𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 to thee of. καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ μετὰ σοῦ, διαφυλάσσων σε ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ πόσῃ οὗ ἐὰν πορευθῇς· καὶ ἀποστρέψω σε εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην, ὅτι οὐ μή σε ἕως τοῦ ποιῆσαί με πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησά σοι. ¹⁶ And Jacob𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 awaked𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤒𐤑 out of his sleep,𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤕𐤅 and he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 Surely𐤀𐤊𐤍 the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 is𐤉𐤔 in this place;𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 and I knew𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 it not. καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕπνου αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι Ἔστιν κύριος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ᾔδειν. ¹⁷ And he was afraid,𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀 and said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 How dreadful𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 is this place!𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 this is none other but the house𐤁𐤉𐤕 of God,𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 and this is the gate𐤔𐤏𐤓 of heaven.𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 καὶ ἐφοβήθη, καὶ εἶπεν Ὡς φοβερὸς ὁ τόπος οὗτος· οὐκ ἔστιν τοῦτο ἁλλ’ ἢ οἶκος θεοῦ, καὶ αὕτη ἡ πύλη τοῦ οὐρανοῦ. ¹⁸ And Jacob𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 rose up early𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤌 in the morning,𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 and took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 the stone𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍 that he had put𐤔𐤌 for his pillows,𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤅 and set it up𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 for a pillar,𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤄 and poured𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤒 oil𐤔𐤌𐤍 upon the top of it.𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤄 καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰακὼβ τὸ πρωί, καὶ ἔλαβεν λίθον ὃν ἔθηκεν ἐκεῖ πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔστησεν αὐτὸν στήλην, καὶ ἐπέχεεν ἔλαιον ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον αὐτῆς. ¹⁹ And he called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 the name𐤔𐤌 of that place𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 Beth–el:𐤁𐤉𐤕 but𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 the name𐤔𐤌 of that city𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 was called Luz𐤋𐤅𐤆 at the first.𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤄 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰακὼβ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου οἶκος θεοῦ· καὶ Οὐλαμμαὺς ἦν ὄνομα τῇ πόλει τὸ πρότερον. ²⁰ And Jacob𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 vowed𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤓 a vow,𐤍𐤃𐤓 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 If God𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 will be with me, and will keep me𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤍𐤉 in this way𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 that I go,𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤊 and will give𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 me bread𐤋𐤇𐤌 to eat,𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋 and raiment𐤅𐤁𐤂𐤃 to put on,𐤋𐤋𐤁𐤔 καὶ ηὔξατο Ἰακὼβ εὐχὴν λέγων Ἐὰν ἦ Κύριος ὁ θεὸς μετ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ διαφυλάξῃ με ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ταύτῃ ᾗ ἐγὼ πορεύομαι, καὶ δῷ μοι ἄρτον φαγεῖν καὶ ἱμάτιον περιβαλέσθαι, ²¹ So that I come again𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 to my father's𐤀𐤁𐤉 house𐤁𐤉𐤕 in peace;𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 then shall the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 be my God:𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 καὶ ἀποστρέψῃ με μετὰ σωτηρίας εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ ἔσται μοι κύριος εἰς θεόν· ²² And this stone,𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤍 which I have set𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 for a pillar,𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤄 shall be God's𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 house:𐤁𐤉𐤕 and of all that thou shalt give𐤕𐤕𐤍 me I will surely𐤏𐤔𐤓 give the tenth𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤍𐤅 unto thee. καὶ ὁ λίθος οὗτος, ὃν ἔστησα στήλην, ἔσται μοι οἶκος θεοῦ· καὶ πάντων ὧν ἐάν μοι δῷς, δεκάτην ἀποδεκατώσω αὐτά σοι.
