Chapter 39 ¹ And Joseph𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 was brought down𐤄𐤅𐤓𐤃 to Egypt;𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤄 and Potiphar,𐤐𐤅𐤈𐤉𐤐𐤓 an officer𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎 of Pharaoh,𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 captain𐤔𐤓 of the guard,𐤄𐤈𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤌 an Egyptian,𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 bought𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤄𐤅 him of the hands𐤌𐤉𐤃 of the Ishmeelites,𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤌 which had brought him down𐤄𐤅𐤓𐤃𐤄𐤅 thither. ἸωσὴΦ δὲ κατήχθη εἰς Αἴγυπτον· καὶ ἐκτήσατο αὐτὸν ΠετεΦρῆς ὁ εὐνοῦχος Φαραὼ ὁ ἀρχιμάγειρος, ἀνὴρ Αἰγύπτιος, ἐκ χειρῶν Ἰσμαηλει τῶν,οἳ κατήγαγον αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ. ² And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 was with Joseph,𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 and he was a prosperous𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤉𐤇 man;𐤀𐤉𐤔 and he was in the house𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 of his master𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 the Egyptian.𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 καὶ ἦν κύριος μετὰ Ἰωσήφ, καὶ ἦν ἀνὴρ ἐπιτυγχάνων· καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῶ οἴκῳ παρὰ τῷ κυρίῳ τῷ Αἰγυπτίῳ. ³ And his master𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 saw𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 that the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 was with him, and that the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 made all that he did𐤏𐤔𐤄 to prosper𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤉𐤇 in his hand.𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 ᾒδει δὲ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ ὃτι Κύριος μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ oaa ὂν ποιῇ, Κύριος εὐοδοῖ ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ. ⁴ And Joseph𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 found𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 grace𐤇𐤍 in his sight,𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 and he served𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤕 him: and he made him overseer𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤄𐤅 over his house,𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 and all that he had𐤉𐤔 he put𐤍𐤕𐤍 into his hand.𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 καὶ εὗρεν 'ΙςσήΦ χάριν ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ, εὐηρέστει δὲ αὐτῷ· καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἦν αὐτῷ ἒδώκεν διὰ χειρὸς ἸωσήΦ. ⁵ And it came to pass from the time𐤌𐤀𐤆 that he had made him overseer𐤄𐤐𐤒𐤉𐤃 in his house,𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 and over all that he had,𐤉𐤔 that the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 blessed𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊 the Egyptian's𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉 house𐤁𐤉𐤕 for Joseph's𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 sake;𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤋 and the blessing𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤕 of the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 was upon all that he had𐤉𐤔 in the house,𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 and in the field.𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὸ κατασταθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα ὃσα ἦν αὐτῷ, καὶ ηὐλόγησεν Κύριος τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου διὰ ἸςσήΦ. καὶ ἐγενήθη εὐλογία Τυρίου ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ. ⁶ And he left𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 all that he had in Joseph's𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 hand;𐤁𐤉𐤃 and he knew𐤉𐤃𐤏 not ought𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤌𐤄 he had, save𐤀𐤌 the bread𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 which he did eat.𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋 And Joseph𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 was a goodly𐤕𐤀𐤓 person, and well𐤉𐤐𐤄 favoured.𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν πάντα ὃσα ἦν αὐτῷ εἰς χεῖρας ἸωςήΦ, καὶ οὐκ ἤδει τῶν καθ’ ἑαυτὸν οὐδὲν πλὴν τοῦ ἄρτου οὗ ἤσθιεν αὐτός. καὶ ἦν Ἰωσὴφ καλὸς τῷ εἴδει καὶ ὡραῖος τῇ σΦόδρα. σφόδρα. ⁷ And it came to pass after𐤀𐤇𐤓 these things,𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 that his master's𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 wife𐤀𐤔𐤕 cast𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀 her eyes𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄 upon Joseph;𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 and she said,𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 Lie𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤄 with me. καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα καὶ ἐπέβαλεν ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῆς ἐπὶ Ἰωσήφ, καὶ εἶπεν Κοιμήυητι μετ’ ἐμοῦ. ⁸ But he refused,𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤀𐤍 and said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto his master's𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 wife,𐤀𐤔𐤕 Behold, my master𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 wotteth𐤉𐤃𐤏 not what is with me in the house,𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 and he hath committed𐤍𐤕𐤍 all that he hath𐤉𐤔 to my hand;𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤉 ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἤθελεν, εἶπεν δὲ τῇ γυναικὶ τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ Εἰ ὁ κύριός μου οὐ γινώσκει δι’ ἐμὲ οὐδὲν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντα ὃσα ἐστὶν αὐτῷ ἔδωκεν εἰς τὰς χεῖράς μου, ⁹ There is none greater𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 in this house𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 than I; neither𐤅𐤋𐤀 hath he kept back𐤇𐤔𐤊 any thing𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤌𐤄 from me but thee, because𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤓 thou𐤀𐤕 art his wife:𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 how then can I do𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 this great𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 wickedness,𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 and sin𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉 against God?𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 καὶ οὐχ ὑπερέχει ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ οὐθὲν ἐμοῦ οὐδὲ ὑπεξῄρηται ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ οὐδὲν πλὴν σοῦ, διὰ τὸ σὲ γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ εἶναι· καὶ πῶς ποιήσω τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ πονηρὸν τοῦτο καὶ ἁμαρτήσομαι ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ ; ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as she spake𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤄 to Joseph𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 day𐤉𐤅𐤌 by day,𐤉𐤅𐤌 that he hearkened𐤔𐤌𐤏 not unto her, to lie𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤁 by her,𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤄 or to be with her. ἡνίκα δὲ ἐλάλει Ἰωσὴφ ἡμέραν ἐξ ἡμέρας, καὶ οὐχ ὑπήκουεν αὐτῇ καθεύδειν μετ’ αὐτῆς τοῦ συγγενέσθαι αὐτῇ. ¹¹ And it came to pass about this time,𐤊𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 that Joseph went𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 into the house𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 to do𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 his business;𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤅 and there was none of the men𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 of the house𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 there within. ἐγένετο δὲ τοιαύτη τις ἡμέρα. εἰσῆλθεν Ἰωσὴφ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ποιεῖν τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐθεὶς ἦν ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἔσω· ¹² And she caught𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤄𐤅 him by his garment,𐤁𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Lie𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤄 with me: and he left𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 his garment𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 in her hand,𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤄 and fled,𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 and got𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 him out.𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 καὶ ἐπεσπάσατο αὐτὸν τῶν ἱματίων αὐτοῦ λέγουσα κοιμήθητι μετ’ ἐμοῦ. καὶ καταλείπων τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω. ¹³ And it came to pass, when she saw𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 that he had left𐤏𐤆𐤁 his garment𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 in her hand,𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤄 and was fled𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 forth,𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἶδεν ὃτι κατέλειπεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῆς καὶ ἒΦυγεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω, ¹⁴ That she called𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 unto the men𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 of her house,𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 and spake𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto them, saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 See,𐤓𐤀𐤅 he hath brought in𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 an Hebrew𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 unto us to mock𐤋𐤑𐤇𐤒 us; he came in𐤁𐤀 unto me to lie𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤁 with me, and I cried𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 with a loud𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 voice:𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς ὄντας ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς λέγουσα Ἲδετε, εἰσήγαγεν ἡμῖν παῖδα Ἑβραῖον εἰν εἰοῆλθεν εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς μὲ λέγων κοιμήθητι μετ’ ἐμοῦ· καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when he heard𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 that I lifted up𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤉 my voice𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 and cried,𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 that he left𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 his garment𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 with me,𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤉 and fled,𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 and got him𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 out.𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 ἐν δὲ τῷ ἀκοῦσαι αὐτὸν ὅτι ὕψωσα τὴν μου καὶ ἐβόησα, καταλείπων τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ παρ’ ἐμοὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω. ¹⁶ And she laid up his garment𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 by her,𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤄 until his lord𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 came𐤁𐤅𐤀 home.𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 καὶ καταλιμπάνει τὰ ἱμάτια παρ’ ἑαυτῇ ἕως ἦλθεν ὁ κύριος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ. ¹⁷ And she spake𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤓 unto him according to these words,𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 The Hebrew𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 servant,𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤃 which thou hast brought𐤁𐤀 unto us, came in𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕 unto me to mock𐤋𐤑𐤇𐤒 me: καἰ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα λέγουσα Εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς μὲ ὁ παῖς ὁ Ἐβραῖος, ὃν εἰσήγαγες πρὸς ἡμᾶς, ἐμπαῖξαί μοι, καὶ εἶπέν μοι κοιμήθητι μετ’ ἐμοῦ. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, as I lifted up𐤊𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤉 my voice𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 and cried,𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 that he left𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁 his garment𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 with me,𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤉 and fled𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎 out.𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑𐤄 ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν ὅτι ὕψωσα τὴν φωνήν μου καὶ ἐβόησα, κατέλειπεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ παρ’ ἐμοὶ καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω. ¹⁹ And it came to pass, when his master𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 heard𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤏 the words𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 of his wife,𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 which she spake𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤄 unto him, saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 After this manner𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 did𐤏𐤔𐤄 thy servant𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤊 to me; that his wrath𐤀𐤐𐤅 was kindled.𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν ὁ κύριος τὰ ῥήματα τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ, ὅσα ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα οὕτως ἐποίησέν μοι ὁ παῖς σου, καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ. ²⁰ And Joseph's𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 master𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 him, and put him𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤄𐤅 into the prison,𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 a place𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 where the king's𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 prisoners𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤉 were bound:𐤀𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 and he was there in the prison.𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 καὶ ἔλαβεν ὁ κύριος Ἰωσὴφ καὶ ἐνέβαλεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ ὀχύρωμα, εἰς τὸν τόπον ἐν ᾧ οἱ δεσμῶται τοῦ βασιλέως κατέχονται ἐκεῖ ἐν τῳ ²¹ But the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 was with Joseph,𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 and shewed𐤅𐤉𐤈 him mercy,𐤇𐤎𐤃 and gave𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 him favour𐤇𐤍𐤅 in the sight𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 of the keeper𐤔𐤓 of the prison.𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 καὶ ἦν κύριος μετὰ Ἰωσὴφ καὶ κατέχεεν αὐτοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔ αὐτῷ χάριν ἐναντίον τοῦ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλακος. ²² And the keeper𐤔𐤓 of the prison𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 committed𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 to Joseph's𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 hand𐤁𐤉𐤃 all the prisoners𐤄𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤌 that were in the prison;𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 and whatsoever they did𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤌 there, he was the doer𐤏𐤔𐤄 of it. καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ ἁ δεσμοφύλαξ τὸ δεσμωτήριον διὰ χειρὸς ἸωςὴΦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀπηγμένους ὅσοι ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ, καὶ πάντα ὅσα ποιοῦσιν ἐκεῖ. ²³ The keeper𐤔𐤓 of the prison𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤄𐤓 looked𐤓𐤀𐤄 not to any thing𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤌𐤄 that was under his hand;𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 because the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 was with him, and that which he did,𐤏𐤔𐤄 the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 made it to prosper.𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤉𐤇 𐤎 ΄οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἀρχιδεσμοΦύλαξ γινώσκων δι’ αὐτὸν οὐθέν· πάντα γὰρ ἦν διὰ χειρὸς ἸωσύΦ, διὰ τὸ τὸν κύριον μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἶναι· καὶ ὅσα αὐτὸς ἐποίει, κύριος εὐοδοῖ ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ.
