Chapter 4 ¹ And Adam𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 knew𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤕 Eve𐤇𐤅𐤄 his wife;𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 and she conceived,𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 and bare𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤕 Cain,𐤒𐤉𐤍 and said,𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 I have gotten𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤉 a man𐤀𐤉𐤔 from𐤀𐤕 the Lord.𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 Ἀδὰμ δὲ ἔγνω Εὕαν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνέλαβεν κα ἔτεκεν τὸν Κάιν. καὶ εἶπεν Ἐκτησάμην ἄνθρωπον διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ. ² And she again𐤅𐤕𐤎𐤐 bare𐤋𐤋𐤃𐤕 his brother𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 Abel.𐤄𐤁𐤋 And Abel𐤄𐤁𐤋 was a keeper𐤓𐤏𐤄 of sheep,𐤑𐤀𐤍 but Cain𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤍 was a tiller𐤏𐤁𐤃 of the ground.𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 καὶ πορσέθηκεν τεκεῖν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἅβελ. καὶ ἐγένετο Ἅβελ ποιμὴν προβάτων· Κάιν δὲ ἦν ἐργαζόμενος τὴν γῆν. ³ And in process𐤌𐤒𐤑 of time𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 it came to pass, that Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 brought𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 of the fruit𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 of the ground𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 an offering𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 unto the Lord.𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 καὶ ἐγένετο μεθ’ ἡμέρας ἤνεγκεν Κάιν ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς θυσίαν τῷ κυρίῳ· ⁴ And Abel,𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤋 he𐤄𐤅𐤀 also brought𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 of the firstlings of his flock𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅 and of the fat𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤁𐤄𐤍 thereof. And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had respect𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤏 unto Abel𐤄𐤁𐤋 and to his offering:𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤅 καὶ Ἅβελ ἤνεγκεν καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπὸ τῶν πρωτοτόκων τῶν προβάτων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν στεάτων αὐτῶν. καὶ ἔπιδεν ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ Ἅβελ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς δώροις αὐτοῦ. ⁵ But unto Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 and to his offering𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤅 he had not respect.𐤔𐤏𐤄 And Cain𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤍 was very𐤌𐤀𐤃 wroth,𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 and his countenance𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 fell.𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 ἐπὶ δὲ Κάιν καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς θυσίαις αὐτοῦ οὐ προσέσχεν. καὶ ἐλύπησεν τὸν Κάιν λίαν καὶ συνέπεσεν τῷ προσώπῳ. ⁶ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto Cain,𐤒𐤉𐤍 Why art thou wroth?𐤇𐤓𐤄 and why is thy countenance𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 fallen?𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῷ Κάιν Ἵνα τί περίλυπος ἐγένου, καὶ ἵνα τί συνέπεσεν τὸ πρόσωπόν σου; ⁷ If𐤀𐤌 thou doest well,𐤕𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 shalt thou not be accepted?𐤔𐤀𐤕 and if thou doest not well,𐤕𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 sin𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 lieth𐤓𐤁𐤑 at the door.𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 And unto thee shall be his desire,𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤕𐤅 and thou shalt rule𐤕𐤌𐤔𐤋 over him. οὐκ ἐὰν ὀρθῶς προσενέγκῃς, ὀρθῶς δὲ μὴ διέλῃς, ἥμαρτες; ἡσύχασον· πρὸς σὲ ἡ ἀποστροφὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ σὺ ἄρξεις αὐτοῦ. ⁸ And Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 talked𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 with𐤀𐤋 Abel𐤄𐤁𐤋 his brother:𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 and it came to pass, when they were in the field,𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 that Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 rose up𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 against𐤀𐤋 Abel𐤄𐤁𐤋 his brother,𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 and slew him.𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤄𐤅 καὶ εἶπεν Κάιν πρὸς Ἅβελ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πεδίον. καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ καὶ ἀνέστη Κάιν ἐπὶ Ἅβελ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτόν. ⁹ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto Cain,𐤒𐤉𐤍 Where𐤀𐤉 is Abel𐤄𐤁𐤋 thy brother?𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 And he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 I know𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 not: Am I my brother's𐤀𐤇𐤉 keeper?𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Κάιν Ποῦ ἐστιν Ἅβελ ὁ ἀδελφός σου; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐ γινώσκω· μὴ φύλαξ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μού εἰ μί’ ἐγώ; ¹⁰ And he said,𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 What𐤌𐤄 hast thou done?𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 the voice𐤒𐤅𐤋 of thy brother's𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 blood𐤃𐤌𐤉 crieth𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤉𐤌 unto me from the ground.𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεός Τί ἐποίησας; φωνή αἵματος τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου βοᾷ πρὸς μὲ ἐκ τῆς γῆς. ¹¹ And now art thou cursed𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 from the earth,𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 which hath opened𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤄 her mouth𐤐𐤉𐤄 to receive𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 thy brother's𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 blood𐤃𐤌𐤉 from thy hand;𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊 καὶ νῦν ἐπικατάρατος σὺ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἢ ἔχανεν τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς δέξασθαι τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου ἐκ τῆς χειρός σου. ¹² When𐤊𐤉 thou tillest𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃 the ground,𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 it shall not henceforth𐤕𐤎𐤐 yield𐤕𐤕 unto thee her strength;𐤊𐤇𐤄 a fugitive𐤍𐤏 and a vagabond𐤅𐤍𐤃 shalt thou be in the earth.𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 ὄτι ἐργᾷ τὴν γῆν, καὶ οὐ προσθήσει τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς δοῦναί σοι. στένων καὶ τρέμων ἔσῃ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. ¹³ And Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto the Lord,𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 My punishment𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 is greater𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 than I can bear.𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤀 καὶ εἶπεν Κάιν πρὸς τὸν κύριον Μείζων ἡ αἰτία μου τοῦ ἀφεθῆναί με. ¹⁴ Behold, thou hast driven me out𐤂𐤓𐤔𐤕 this day𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 from the face𐤐𐤍𐤉 of the earth;𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 and from𐤌𐤏𐤋 thy face𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 shall I be hid;𐤀𐤎𐤕𐤓 and I shall be a fugitive𐤍𐤏 and a vagabond𐤅𐤍𐤃 in the earth;𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 and it shall come to pass,𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤉 that every one that findeth me𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤉 shall slay me.𐤉𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤍𐤉 εἰ ἐκβαλεῖς με σήμερον ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου κρυβήσομαι, καὶ ἔσομαι στένων καὶ τρέμων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ πᾶς ὁ εὑρίσκων με ἀποκτενεῖ με. ¹⁵ And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, Therefore𐤋𐤊𐤍 whosoever slayeth𐤄𐤓𐤂 Cain,𐤒𐤉𐤍 vengeance shall be taken𐤉𐤒𐤌 on him sevenfold.𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤌 And the Lord𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 set𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 a mark𐤀𐤅𐤕 upon Cain,𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤍 lest𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 any finding𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅 him should kill𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤕 him. καὶ εἶπεν οὐτῶ Κύριος ὁ θεός Οὐχ οὕτως· πᾶς ὁ ἀποκτείνας Κάιν ἑπτὰ ἐκδικούμενα παραλύσει. καὶ ἔθετο κύριος ὁ θεὸς σῃμεῖον τῷ Κάιν τοῦ μὴ ἀνελεῖν αὐτὸν πάντα τὸν εὑρίσκοντα αὐτόν. ¹⁶ And Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 went out𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 from the presence𐤌𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 of the Lord,𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 and dwelt𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 in the land𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 of Nod,𐤍𐤅𐤃 on the east𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤕 of Eden.𐤏𐤃𐤍 ἐξῆλθεν δὲ Κάιν ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐν γῇ Ναὶδ κάτεναντι Ἔδεμ. ¹⁷ And Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 knew𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 his wife;𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 and she conceived,𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 and bare𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 Enoch:𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊 and he builded𐤁𐤍𐤄 a city,𐤏𐤉𐤓 and called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 the name𐤔𐤌 of the city,𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 after the name𐤊𐤔𐤌 of his son,𐤁𐤍𐤅 Enoch.𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊 Καὶ ἔγνω Κάιν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν τὸν Ἑνώχ. καὶ ἦν οἰκοδομῶν πόλιν· καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὴν πόλιν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἐνώχ. ¹⁸ And unto Enoch𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊 was born𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃 Irad:𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤃 and Irad𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤃 begat𐤉𐤋𐤃 Mehujael:𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤋 and Mehujael𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤀𐤋 begat𐤉𐤋𐤃 Methusael:𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤋 and Methusael𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤋 begat𐤉𐤋𐤃 Lamech.𐤋𐤌𐤊 ἐγενήθη δὲ τῷ Ἑνῶχ Γαιδάδ, καὶ Γαιδὰδ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μαιήλ, καὶ Μαιὴλ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μαθουσαλά, καὶ Μαθουσαλὰ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Λάμεχ. ¹⁹ And Lamech𐤋𐤌𐤊 took𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 unto him two𐤔𐤕𐤉 wives:𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 the name𐤔𐤌 of the one𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤕 was Adah,𐤏𐤃𐤄 and the name𐤅𐤔𐤌 of the other𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 Zillah.𐤑𐤋𐤄 καὶ ἔλαβεν ἑαυτῷ Λάμεχ δύο γυναῖκας· ὄνομα τῇ μιᾷ Ἀδά, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ δευτέρᾳ Σέλλα. ²⁰ And Adah𐤏𐤃𐤄 bare𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 Jabal:𐤉𐤁𐤋 he was the father𐤀𐤁𐤉 of such as dwell𐤉𐤔𐤁 in tents,𐤀𐤄𐤋 and of such as have cattle.𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 καί ἔτεκεν Ἄδα τὸν Ἰωβέλ· οὗτος ἦν ὁ πατὴρ οἰκούντων ἐν σκηναῖς κτηνοτρόφων. ²¹ And his brother's𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 name𐤅𐤔𐤌 was Jubal:𐤉𐤅𐤁𐤋 he was the father𐤀𐤁𐤉 of all such as handle𐤕𐤐𐤔 the harp𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤓 and organ.𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤂𐤁 καὶ ὄνομα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ Ἰουβάλ· οὗτος ἦν ὁ καταδείξας ψαλτήριον καὶ κιθάραν. ²² And Zillah,𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤄 she also bare𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄 Tubal–cain,𐤕𐤅𐤁𐤋 an instructer𐤋𐤈𐤔 of every artificer in brass𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 and iron:𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 and the sister𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤕 of Tubal–cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 was Naamah.𐤍𐤏𐤌𐤄 Σελλὰ δὲ ἔτεκεν καὶ αὐτὴ τὸν Θόβελ· καὶ ἦν σφυροκόπος χαλκεὺς χαλκοῦ καὶ σιδήρου. ἀδελφὴ δὲ Θόβελ Νοεμά. ²³ And Lamech𐤋𐤌𐤊 said𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto his wives,𐤋𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤅 Adah𐤏𐤃𐤄 and Zillah,𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤄 Hear𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍 my voice;𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉 ye wives𐤍𐤔𐤉 of Lamech,𐤋𐤌𐤊 hearken𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤄 unto my speech:𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 for I have slain𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤕𐤉 a man𐤀𐤉𐤔 to my wounding,𐤋𐤐𐤑𐤏𐤉 and a young man𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃 to my hurt.𐤋𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 εἶπεν δὲ Λάμεχ ταῖς ἑαυτοῦ Ἄδα καὶ Σέλλα, ἀκούσατέ μου τῆς φωνῆς· γυναῖκες Λάμεχ, ἐνωτίσασθέ μου τοὺς λόγους· ὅτι ἄνδρα ἀπέκτεινα εἰς τραῦμα ἐμοί, καὶ νεανίσκον εἰς μώλωπα ἐμοί· ²⁴ If𐤊𐤉 Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 shall be avenged𐤉𐤒𐤌 sevenfold,𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤌 truly Lamech𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤊 seventy𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 and sevenfold.𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 ὅτι ἑπτάκις ἐκδεδίκηται ἐκ Κάιν, ἐκ δὲ Λάμεχ ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά, ²⁵ And Adam knew𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 his wife𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 again;𐤏𐤅𐤃 and she bare𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 a son,𐤁𐤍 and called𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 his name𐤔𐤌𐤅 Seth:𐤔𐤕 For God,𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 said she, hath appointed𐤔𐤕 me another𐤀𐤇𐤓 seed𐤆𐤓𐤏 instead𐤕𐤇𐤕 of Abel,𐤄𐤁𐤋 whom𐤊𐤉 Cain𐤒𐤉𐤍 slew.𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤅 Ἔγνω δὲ Ἀδὰμ Εὕαν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν υἱόν. καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Σὴθ λέγουσα Ἐξανέστησεν γάρ μοι ὁ θεὸς σπέρμα ἕτερον ἀντὶ Ἅβελ, ὃν ἀπέκτεινεν Κάιν. ²⁶ And to Seth,𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤕 to him𐤄𐤅𐤀 also there was born𐤉𐤋𐤃 a son;𐤁𐤍 and he called𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 his name𐤔𐤌𐤅 Enos:𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 then began men𐤄𐤅𐤇𐤋 to call𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀 upon the name𐤁𐤔𐤌 of the Lord.𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐 καὶ τῷ Σὴθ ἐγένετο υἱός, ἐπωνόμασεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐνώς· οὗτος ἤλπισεν ἐπικαλεῖσθαι τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ.
