Chapter 23 ¹ And Sarah𐤔𐤓𐤄 was an hundred𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 and seven𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏 and twenty𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 years𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 old:𐤇𐤉𐤉 these were the years𐤔𐤍𐤉 of the life𐤇𐤉𐤉 of Sarah.𐤔𐤓𐤄 Ἐγένετο δὲ ἡ ζωὴ Σάρρας ἔτη ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτά. ² And Sarah𐤔𐤓𐤄 died𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤕 in Kirjath–arba;𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 the same is Hebron𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 in the land𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 of Canaan:𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 and Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 came𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 to mourn𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤃 for Sarah,𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤄 and to weep𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤊𐤕𐤄 for her. καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σάρρα ἐν πόλει Ἀρβόκ, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν τῷ κοιλώματι· αὕτη Χεβρὼν ἐν γῇ Χανάαν. ἦλθεν δὲ Ἀβραὰμ κόψασθαι Σάρραν καὶ πενθῆσαι. ³ And Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 stood up𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 from before𐤐𐤍𐤉 his dead,𐤌𐤕𐤅 and spake𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 unto the sons𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth,𐤇𐤕 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 καὶ ἀνέστη Ἀβραὰμ ἀπὸ τοῦ νεκροῦ αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβραὰμ τοῖς υἱοῖς Χὲτ λέγων ⁴ I am a stranger𐤂𐤓 and a sojourner𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤔𐤁 with you: give𐤕𐤍𐤅 me a possession𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤕 of a buryingplace𐤒𐤁𐤓 with you, that I may bury𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤄 my dead𐤌𐤕𐤉 out of my sight.𐤌𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 Πάροικος καὶ παρεπίδημος ἐγώ εἰμι μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν· δότε οὖν μοι κτῆσιν τάφου μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν, καὶ θάψω τὸν νεκρόν μου ἐκεῖ. ⁵ And the children𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth𐤇𐤕 answered𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 Abraham,𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 saying𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Χὲτ πρὸς Ἀβραὰμ λέγοντες ⁶ Hear us,𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤅 my lord:𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 thou art a mighty𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 prince𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀 among us:𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤅 in the choice𐤁𐤌𐤁𐤇𐤓 of our sepulchres𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤍𐤅 bury𐤒𐤁𐤓 thy dead;𐤌𐤕𐤊 none𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤀 of us shall withhold𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤄 from thee his sepulchre,𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤅 but that thou mayest bury𐤌𐤒𐤁𐤓 thy dead.𐤌𐤕𐤊 Μή, κύριε· ἄκουσον δὲ ἡμῶν. βασιλεὺς παρὰ θεοῦ σὺ εἶ ἐν ἡμῖν· ἐν τοῖς ἐκλεκτοῖς μνημείοις ἡμῶν θάψον τὸν νεκρόν σου· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἡμῶν τὸ μνημεῖον αὐτοῦ κωλύσει ἀπὸ σοῦ, τοῦ θάψαι τὸν νεκρόν σου ἐκεῖ. ⁷ And Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 stood up,𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 and bowed𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅 himself to the people𐤋𐤏𐤌 of the land,𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 even to the children𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth.𐤇𐤕 ἀναστὰς δὲ Ἀβραὰμ προσεκύνησεν τῷ λαῷ τῆς γῆς, τοῖς υἱοῖς Χέτ. ⁸ And he communed𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 with them, saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 If it be𐤉𐤔 your mind𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊𐤌 that I should bury𐤋𐤒𐤁𐤓 my dead𐤌𐤕𐤉 out of my sight;𐤌𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 hear𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 me, and intreat𐤅𐤐𐤂𐤏𐤅 for me to Ephron𐤁𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 the son𐤁𐤍 of Zohar,𐤑𐤇𐤓 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἀβραὰμ λέγων Εἰ ἔχετε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν ὥστε θάψαι τὸν νεκρόν μου ἀπὸ προσώπου μου, ἀκούσατέ μου καὶ λαλήσατε περὶ ἐμοῦ Ἐφρὼν τῷ τοῦ Σάαρ· ⁹ That he may give𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 me the cave𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤕 of Machpelah,𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤐𐤋𐤄 which he hath, which is in the end𐤁𐤒𐤑𐤄 of his field;𐤔𐤃𐤄𐤅 for as much𐤌𐤋𐤀 money𐤁𐤊𐤎𐤐 as it is worth he shall give it𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤍𐤄 me for a possession𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤕 of a buryingplace𐤒𐤁𐤓 amongst you.𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊𐤌 καὶ δότω μοι τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ διπλοῦν ὅ ἐστιν αὐτῷ, τὸ ὂν ἐν μερίδι τοῦ ἀγροῦ αὐτοῦ· ἀργυρίου τοῦ ἀξίου δότε μοι αὐτὸ ἐν ὑμῖν εἰς κτῆσιν μνημείου. ¹⁰ And Ephron𐤅𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 dwelt𐤉𐤔𐤁 among𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 the children𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth:𐤇𐤕 and Ephron𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 the Hittite𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤉 answered𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 in the audience𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 of the children𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth,𐤇𐤕 even of all that went in𐤁𐤀𐤉 at the gate𐤔𐤏𐤓 of his city,𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤅 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 Ἐφρὼν δὲ ἐκάθητο ἐν μέσῳ τῶν υἱῶν χέτ· ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἐφρὼν ὁ Χετταῖος πρὸς Ἀβραὰμ εἶπεν, ἀκουόντων τῶν υἱῶν Χὲτ καὶ πάντων τῶν εἰσπορευομένων εἰς τὴν πόλιν, λέγων ¹¹ Nay,𐤋𐤀 my lord,𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 hear me:𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤉 the field𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 give I𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 thee, and the cave𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤄 that is therein, I give it𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤄 thee; in the presence𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 of the sons𐤁𐤍𐤉 of my people𐤏𐤌𐤉 give𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤄 I it thee: bury𐤒𐤁𐤓 thy dead.𐤌𐤕𐤊 Παρ᾿ ἐμοὶ γενοῦ, κύριε, καὶ ἄκουσόν μου. τὸν ἀγρὸν καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ σοὶ δίδωμι· ἐναντίον τῶν πολιτῶν μου δέδωκά σοι· θάψον τὸν νεκρόν σου. ¹² And Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 bowed down𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅 himself before𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 the people𐤏𐤌 of the land.𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 καὶ προσεκύνησεν Ἀβραὰμ ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς γῆς· ¹³ And he spake𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 unto Ephron𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 in the audience𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 of the people𐤏𐤌 of the land,𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 saying,𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee,𐤋𐤅 hear𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤉 me: I will give𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 thee money𐤊𐤎𐤐 for the field;𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 take𐤒𐤇 it of me, and I will bury𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤄 my dead𐤌𐤕𐤉 there. καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ἐφρὼν εἰς τὰ ὦτα ἐναντίον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς γῆς Ἐπειδὴ πρὸς ἐμοῦ εἶ, ἄκουσόν μου· τὸ ἀργύριον τοῦ ἀγροῦ λάβε παρ᾿ ἐμοῦ, καὶ θάψον τὸν νεκρόν μου ἐκεῖ. ¹⁴ And Ephron𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 answered𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 Abraham,𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 saying𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 unto him, ἀπεκρίθη δὲ Ἐφρὼν τῷ Ἀβραὰμ λέγων ¹⁵ My lord,𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 hearken𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤉 unto me: the land𐤀𐤓𐤑 is worth four𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 hundred𐤌𐤀𐤕 shekels𐤔𐤒𐤋 of silver;𐤊𐤎𐤐 what is that betwixt𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉 me and thee? bury𐤒𐤁𐤓 therefore thy dead.𐤌𐤕𐤊 Οὐχί, κύριε, ἀκήκοα γάρ· τετρακοσίων διδράχμων ἀργυρίου· ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ τί ἄν τοῦτο; σὺ δὲ τὸν νεκρόν σου θάψον. ¹⁶ And Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 hearkened𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 unto Ephron;𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 and Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 weighed𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤋 to Ephron𐤋𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤍 the silver,𐤄𐤊𐤎𐤐 which he had named𐤃𐤁𐤓 in the audience𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 of the sons𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth,𐤇𐤕 four𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 hundred𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 shekels𐤔𐤒𐤋 of silver,𐤊𐤎𐤐 current𐤏𐤁𐤓 money with the merchant.𐤋𐤎𐤇𐤓 καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἀβραὰμ τῷ Ἐφρών· καὶ ἀπεκατέστησεν Ἀβραὰμ τῷ Ἐφρὼν τὸ ἀργύριον ὃ ἐλάλησεν εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν υἱῶν Χέτ, τετρακόσια δίδραχμα ἀργυρίου δοκίμου ἐντόροις. ¹⁷ And the field𐤔𐤃𐤄 of Ephron,𐤏𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤍 which was in Machpelah,𐤁𐤌𐤊𐤐𐤋𐤄 which was before𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 Mamre,𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤀 the field,𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 and the cave𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤄 which was therein, and all the trees𐤄𐤏𐤑 that were in the field,𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 that were in all the borders𐤂𐤁𐤋𐤅 round about,𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 were made sure𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 καὶ ἔστη ὁ ἀγρὸς Ἐφρών, ὃς ἦν ἐν τῷ διπλῷ σπηλαίῳ, ὅς ἐστιν κατὰ πρόσωπον Μαθβρή, ὁ ἀγρὸς καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ὃ ἦν αὐτῷ, καὶ πᾶν δένδρον ὃ ἦν ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ, ὅ ἐστιν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτοῦ κύκλῳ, ¹⁸ Unto Abraham𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 for a possession𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 in the presence𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 of the children𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth,𐤇𐤕 before all that went in𐤁𐤀𐤉 at the gate𐤔𐤏𐤓 of his city.𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤅 τῷ Ἀβραὰμ εἰς κτῆσιν ἐναντίον τῶν υἱῶν Χέτ καὶ πάντων τῶν εἰσπορευομένων εἰς τὴν πόλιν. ¹⁹ And after𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 this,𐤊𐤍 Abraham𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 buried𐤒𐤁𐤓 Sarah𐤔𐤓𐤄 his wife𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 in the cave𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤕 of the field𐤔𐤃𐤄 of Machpelah𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤐𐤋𐤄 before𐤐𐤍𐤉 Mamre:𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤀 the same is Hebron𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 in the land𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 of Canaan.𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 μετὰ ταῦτα Ἔθαψεν Ἀβραὰμ Σάρραν τὴν γτωαῖκα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ τοῦ ἀγροῦ τῷ διπλῷ, ὅ ἐστιν ἀπέναντι Μαμβρή· αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρὼν ἐν τῇ γῇ Χανάαν. ²⁰ And the field,𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 and the cave𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤄 that is therein, were made sure𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 unto Abraham𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 for a possession𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤕 of a buryingplace𐤒𐤁𐤓 by the sons𐤁𐤍𐤉 of Heth.𐤇𐤕 𐤎 καὶ ἐκυρώθη ὁ ἀγρὸς καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ὃ ἦν αὐτῷ τῷ Ἀβραὰμ εἰς κτῆσιν τάφου πα ἁ τῶν υἱῶν Χέτ.
